During my employment at AST, on site at Sanlam, I fulfilled several roles, - Project DBA for the Millennium Program; Production DBA for the Millennium production systems (DB2 and SQL Server); Senior SQL Server DBA, primarily consulting on other SQL Server projects at the Client.
As project DBA, specifically allocated to the Millennium Project, I had key responsibilities that included ownership in the development, test, training and stand-alone SQL Server environments, and DB2 for z/OS, version 5. This included covered all aspects of DBA role, from installations of servers (for SQL Server), to implementation and roll-out of structure changes and releases (SQL and DB2), including SQL code review for standards and performance, disaster recovery processes, volumetrics estimations etc (again for SQL and DB2).
In my role as production DBA, I provided on-site and remote support for the production Sanlam SQL server environments on a rotation basis. This included issue and problem analysis and resolution of high profile/impact production SQL Server and DB2 application database incidents.
In my role as one of the senior DBA’s on site, my responsibilities included consultation to, and QA of, junior DBA’s database design and implementation, as well as enhancing the DBA team’s processes.

Sanlam is the second largest life insurance organization in South Africa with several million policies on book. After completing studies with their assistance in a scholarship, I entered employment with them as a database administrator.
My initial role in the organization was as an application DBA, responsible for development, test and production support of specific application databases on DB2. Early in 1996, I was moved to take on project DBA responsibilities in proof-of-concept trailblazer projects on the HPS case tools. This led to my long-term assignment, as a Project DBA, to the FINPRO programme which was the IT programme responsible for moving Sanlam’s technology away from predominantly Cobol and assembler mainframe systems. This eventually culminated in the Millennium project, where core systems were migrated to SQL Server. I retained a role as part of the production support roster for DB2 application databases.
