Rik Farenhorst’s Summary

My PhD research at VU University Amsterdam focuses on architectural knowledge management, which entails the application of knowledge management practices in an enterprise and software architecture domain. I am also involved in teaching the Master course on software architecture.

As technical consultant and researcher at Capgemini BAS B.V. I work on defining and improving methods, processes, and (Web 2.0) tool support for the enterprise and software architecture domain, with a particular emphasis on knowledge management support. My recent activities include the design and implementation of a enterprise wiki environment for our 'architecture community', the training of colleague architects on how to effectively describe architectures, and the establishment of process guidelines for evaluation and evolution of architectures. Last but not least, I guide interns who conduct their master thesis research in the field of architectural knowledge management.

At Capgemini BAS, which was previously known as Getronics PinkRoccade Business Application Services, I work part-time as technical consultant and researcher in enterprise and software architecture. I work on defining and improving methods, processes, and (Web 2.0) tool support for the enterprise and software architecture domain, with a particular emphasis on knowledge management support. • Ph.D. Researcher in Software Engineering

    VU University Amsterdam

(Educational Institution; 1001-5000 employees; Research industry)

    April 2005Present (4 years 4 months)

I conduct research in the area of architectural knowledge management, which entails the application of knowledge management practices in an enterprise and software architecture domain. As of yet, I published more than 12 publications on this topic in international refereed conferences or journals.

My PhD research is conducted in the context of the Griffin project. (http://griffin.cs.vu.nl) that aims to develop notations, tools and associated methods to extract, represent and use architectural knowledge effectively. My research focuses specifically on support for sharing architectural knowledge. We discovered that depending on the type of (tacit or explicit) architectural knowledge, different knowledge sharing strategies are effective in the architecting process. Based on these insights, we have designed and implementation Web 2.0-based tool support. We currently experiment with these tools in practice.
