Welcome to 'The Police Debate' discussion group. Our purpose is to foster constructive discussion of UK policing reform.
This is a time of significant challenge. Budgets are shrinking, whilst expectations of the police role, and associated performance, continue to grow. The Home Office set out this challenge in its Summer 2010 consultation paper entitled "Policing in the 21st Century: Reconnecting Police and the People", on which it invited debate. The paper contained proposals "for ways to make police in England and Wales more available and responsive, more accountable, more effective, and better value for money".
On 5th August 2010, Police Professional and PA Consulting organised and broadcast a panel discussion between the Police Minister and representatives from ACPO, the APA, the PSAEW and NPIA. Highlights can be seen at www.paconsulting.com/thepolicedebate, with the full broadcast available at www.policeprofessional.com. Full analysis of the broadcast was published in Police Professional's August 19th issue and on its website.
This group seeks to contribute to the ongoing debate. Please feel free to contribute here, giving your views on the very significant challenges that UK policing must now meet. All are welcome to contribute. However, please:
