What/who would you recommend for a "crash course" in social media marketing?

I'm finding LinkedIn a really useful networking and business development tool, and I'm investing some time and money to teach myself how to use it better.

I've been getting LOTS of pitches from various self-proclaimed experts (and they may very well BE experts), promising to unlock the mysteries of social network marketing for me.

Have any of you taken a course, linked up with someone, done some training etc. that you have found particularly valuable and effective? What do you think is a reasonable amount to pay for it (when one is paying for it oneself)?

    Howdy that's a valid question and yes there are so many crash courses out there that you feel a bit overwhelmed, which one you should go for. Having said that though i would not negate the fact that taking a course is a good option especially if you are starting out. All of us try and do things because we want to spread the word about our product or service and some of us will go with the trial and experimenting option while some of us will go about it by taking the relevant coaching from a mentor.

    There are a couple of ways that you could go about learning social media. These were some of the strategies that i used personally may be it could be of help to the community who participates in this discussion thread.

    No one within the Social media field can clam to be a Guru everyone is learning as they go through this process.

    1. I started of by reading a book introducing the concept of personal branding
    2. Then i went on youtube and watched about 10 videos around the importance of personal branding
    3. Then searched for the word personal branding and read the top 10 posts that featured on Google. why did i not dig deeper? well my rationale was that the top 10 posts took the time to be ranked top 10.
    4. Then joined a social media group on linkedin
    5. Took down notes about the key factors that are involved with personal branding and social media
    6. Made a checklist of what i need to learn such as B2B marketing, finding my target audience, how to connect with my fans followers, etc
    7. Enrolled in 2 courses online that covered the topic of Internet Marketing, Traffic Generation
    8. Enrolled in the course because I felt comfortable with the person delivering the course.
    9. I did not know much about the person nor had i seen this person actively involved on LinkedIn or Twitter or Facebook but they were good at marketing.
    10. Some of us genuinely know the ins and outs of using social media tools but sometimes i guess we lack the skill of marketing.

    So in summary if you do enroll in a course go with what your inner voice feels because there are many courses out there just like many books and many videos the key is feeling comfortable with the person delivering the course and if that person could connect with you through their online course you know for a fact that you will learn from them.

    I've found a few things very helpful in figuring out the social media thing-

    Mashable, Techcrunch, Inside Facebook, Social Media Examiner, Alltop, iMedia Connection, ClickZ, Marketing Profs, Marketing Sherpa, AAF Smartbrief on Social Media and the Word of Mouth Marketing Association (WOMMA).

    I also have to give a shout out to what I think of as my social media triumvirate--Guy Kawasaki, Jeremiah Owyang and Brian Solis. You can learn most of what you need to know if you follow these guys and read their books, papers and posts.

    And don't forget, we're all learning together all the time! That's what make social so great and so much fun!

    I would also recommend reading any of the books by Seth Godin, or following him on Twitter @sethgodins His thoughts and theories on marketing in general are great for getting a foundation on Social Media.

    Building on Frank's comment, try using the media yourself. From using the tools you can put yourself in your audience's shoes and learn from what you like/dislike and how to relate that to your audience. Good luck!

    Have you seen or thought about Let's Get Social? For a crash course, this is really a good introduction - that's how I got started - and should get you up and running fairly quickly, and it's pretty reasonable at only $97.
