Student Tracking

Director of Technology at Jonesboro Public Schools

We have a new need at our high school that I'm hoping someone has a solution for

Due to some major changes in scheduling we now have a need to track where students go within the school. (from class to class)

During a period that I can best describe as "study hall" extended, students will be able to check in to the main class but leave to get help from other teachers if needed.

The admin are wanting an efficient way to make sure the students are actually going to the place they are supposed to instead of just roaming the halls, hanging out in bathroom, or just leaving. (it is 7th period)

We would like a solution that won't "break the bank".

Add an additional period to your master schedule and have the students scheduled into that course where they're supposed to be. You should have the option to take attendance and not have it count toward your ADA or other attendance calculations so this double attendance method should not affect you calculations. You could also make this a 1 minute course in case your attendance is based on seat time or hourly instruction.

Mike's idea is the best solution. If you think you need more flexibility with your scheduling software, you are welcome to contact us at SchoolBrains. Although we provide integrated SIS and assessment solutions, districts can purchase just the modules they need in order to save money and our scheduler is completely customizable. Good luck.

Our high school issues paper passports that are collected by the teacher the student goes to see for help. Students are not allowed in the halls without that passport. Once collected, they are not allowed to leave the teacher's classroom. (Students do not take this time very seriously.)
For a time, I think we were keeping track on a spreadsheet - where the students went and which teachers had visitors.
I can't think of a technical solution to this issue of students roaming and/or leaving.

Oh, yeah, and my school just moved the 'Advisory Period' to before lunch to discourage students leaving.

We have thought about putting RFID Security Sensors on Laptops. I guess I could see a Class Pass issued to a student and that pass have an Active RFID Security Sensor on it and that sensor would use the existing wifi to report its location. Here is an interesting link.
