STEMware: Zombie Plague public test version released!

Open Education Resources Program Manager at Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction

Zombie Plague is the inaugural software program from the STEMware™ NSF project at UC Davis that unites partners from science and education research, teaching, and industry to develop “serious games” with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) content. In this FREE game directed towards a high school audience, students investigate the microorganism causing a deadly zombie outbreak, implement a cure, save the town, and learn important modern biology concepts and career options.

Please download, take and look, and let us know what you think via our online survey or you can email me directly. (Please note that we are still working on the achievement/reward/notebook systems). In the meantime, I’d really appreciate your input!

But can't they mow down zombies with shotguns?

I routinely game the zombie apocalypse (http://genericgaminggoodness.wordpress.com/), and the problem with shotguns is that, while effective at close range, they simply attract more zombies. Give me body armour and an axe any day.

We had a large contingent of student testers who wanted to shoot the zombies with micropipet tips. However, in the end, we've decided to tranquilize the zomb... (I mean infected townfolk) with darts until the proper course of treatment is discoverd by players.

Hi Barbara - great idea. Given my own background in biotechnology I am excited to see serious games in this area.
