IT continues to revolutionise the world in which we live at a breathtaking pace, fuelled by the exponential development of computer processing power and the growth of ever faster broadband internet.

Despite spending around £16 billion per year, government IT can often appear to be a long way from this exciting world as it is trapped in an outdated model which attempts to lock project requirements upfront and then proceeds at a glacial pace.

With the appointment of a new Government CIO, a drive towards a more effective and efficient use of IT and a Select Committee inquiry, the Institute for Government is publishing a new report, System Error: Fixing the flaws in government IT.

The report sets out the case for a new approach to IT in the public sector and recommends tackling two important aspects simultaneously:

* platform - delivering government-wide efficiencies of scale and interoperability
* agile - facilitating rapid response and innovation at the front line.

This group has been set up to openly discuss the inbuilt, systematic problems with government IT and how they can be resolved by taking such a radically different approach. « less
