How would you define the word "Idea?"

Innovation Lead, Senior Social Media Strategist at The Institute for International Research IIR Top Contributor

I've been paying attention to the use of the term "idea" and it seems really broad - how would you explain "idea" or what's the best definition of it?

    Dear Valerie,
IDEA is a new combination of old elements. It is the outcome of the process in which all your previous knowledge, experiences, emotions, attitudes... combine to create a new and interesting organization of different elements.
Here is an interesting article about how new ideas are born in our mind:

I honestly don't know what the 'best' way to define it is.. I wonder if there is a single definition that would cover it all?
An idea may be related to an artistic work, to a practical tool, a theory.. they all demand different kinds of knowledge, and different applications of it. Artistic ideas might be more related to perception (images, associations..), while theories clearly ask for making judgments about the knowledge you possess.
Sorry, this is not very helpful!

A new thought or insight that has not yet taken form. It requires a nurturing environment. Ideas are easily killed before they grow into something worth pursuing. On their own, ideas are worthless. They need to grow into something that provides value to someone. Sometimes this germination takes more time than we want.

Brilliant question. I would want to broaden the definition so that it is a new combination of thoughts to me. Admittedly if someone else has had the idea then i may never take my idea to society but there is huge personal value in the internal process of generating the idea. The more we exercise creativity in this way the more creative we become.

I think Martin's point about the fragility of ideas is also important. The 'Disney model' in NLP has three useful stages - dream - plan (how can I make the dream real?) - critique the plan (never the dream). The pertinent point about the model is that the dream is untouchable and must never be criticised or doubted.

@Pirjo, this is very helpful. I am more interested in the way we perceive "idea" than the definition itself. @Ian, thanks!

It's a potential solution that has survived your internal evaluation criteria and now it is ready to be externalized and put to a more rigorous test.

imho., it is not that easy to define ' IDEA '

    a.

Idea - without context or sort of connection to other existing concepts, objects / actions and ' ideas ' themselves ( recursive ) is not that easy to define.

Creativity - come out with plan / action to a new object made out loose materials / thoughts with form / frame which some or many others enjoy experiencing it and happy to possess it.

Innovation - a successful product / service delivered in the market place.

Ideas do have life time, half life ............ some ever radiating depending on the Idea Package .Simple exploration,

    E - Engineering

    A - Action ( Marketing - Production - Consumption )
