How to Import attachments in CRM 2011?
I tried importing attachments using the links
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/crm/archive/2008/03/11/migrating-notes-and-attachments-using-data-migration-manager.aspxhttp://207.46.16.248/en-us/library/gg309694.aspx#BKMK_Notes
but I get the following error:
"The reference to the attachment could not be found".
Any ideas on how I can accomplish this?
I have tried various permutations and combinations of (file name vs full path), (Folder name as documents vs attachments vs in the same folder as the import file).
Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Gautam B. • Hi Shweta,
You are referring to outdated information. DMM is not supported in CRM 2011.
Please see the link
http://help.crm.dynamics.com/help/default.aspx?area=%2fworkplace%2fhome_dashboards.aspx&user_lcid=1033&ver=5.0
and search for Import Notes for details on importing notes and attachments

You might also care to look at Inaport for Microsoft CRM:

Inaport is a full featured data migration and integration product that can be used for everything from simple lead import through to full bi-directional integration between Microsoft CRM and back office systems and ERP.
Inaport is also able to move attachments from any directory to MSCRM on premise and on line.
For an example of how Inaport can add value even to a simple process such as lead import, see our blog post:

David/Tayyab - Thanks for informing me about the products that will make importing easier. It sure is a pain and time consuming process especially when you have to clean up the existing data too. I should be able to import the attachments though. I am sure it is a minor syntax/format thing that I am not able to get right.
Gautam - I found an article about importing notes/attachments in the link that you had given. The article mentions that the attachments should be in a zip folder. I tried that but still am getting the same error... I am writing below the steps that I have taken up for importing and may be if you or someone else in the group has any idea on what is it that I am doing wrong, then please correct me.
I have a separate folder for importing notes that contains my import file and a zip folder named 'Attachments' that has all the attachments. I have named the attachments as 1, 2, 3, 4 etc with no file extensions. The import file contains 4 columns. They are populated as follows:
Regarding - Record name ( for eg., Test)
Document - 1 ( 1, 2, 3, etc)
FileName - abc.txt, xyz.xls, uvw.doc etc
Title - Test 1, Test 2, Test 3 etc.

David E. • Hi Shweta
I got interested, so I had a play. I got the same error as you, but got it working eventually.
It is *not* obvious from the documentation, but the way I did it is:
0. Modify the standard note.xml template - add a PhysicalFileName column, with just the name of the file (each name must be unique)
1. have a zip file *with* the note.xml in the root directory of the zip
2. have the files being imported in the Attachments directory of the zip
3. tell the Import Manager to use the zip file (NOT hte note.xml file)
4. in the mappings, make sure you map PhysicalFileName to the "Documents": column
I only imported two files to a single account, but it took five tries... :-)
Hope this helps. If you need something more complex, remember that Inaport can be used for this and many, many other more complicated tasks.
