How Alcohol Bothers the Brain
Because alcohol easily dissolves in fatty tissue, and the brain is mostly fat, it can reach high concentrations in brain tissue. Researchers believe that the power of alcohol to intoxicate is related to it properties as a solvent: It can dissolve the fatty walls of the brain-cell membrane.
Of particular concern is research from the National Institutes of Health showing that alcohol decreases the concentration of DHA in brain-cell membranes. The loss of this main structural fat in the brain may be the basic reason why alcoholics suffer various degrees of dementia and is one reason why DHA supplements are prescribed as part of the treatment plan for alcoholics.
