The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) is the world’s largest single study of entrepreneurial activity. Initiated in 1999 with a survey of 10 countries, GEM has to date collected data in more than 80 economies worldwide. In 2010 data was collected in 59 economies.

GEM is unique in entrepreneurship research in its focus on the role of the individual in the entrepreneurial process. Unlike most entrepreneurship data sets that measure newer and smaller firms, GEM studies the behaviour of individuals with respect to starting and managing a business.

Interviewing a random sample of at least 2,000 adults in each participating country, GEM considers attitudes towards entrepreneurship, and the activities and characteristics of those involved in its various stages. In addition, national experts are consulted on factors that can explain the nature and level of entrepreneurship in their economies.

At the end of each annual cycle, the data gathered is analysed and the results are published in a global report. Each participating country also produces a national report, providing a detailed country-specific view and national policy recommendations. In addition, GEM produces regular ‘special topic’ reports on key issues such as social entrepreneurship, education and training, and women and entrepreneurship. « less
