The European Parliament represents not just its 754 elected members. It represents you, the 500 million EU citizens who put them in office serving the second largest democratic electorate in the world.

The official European Parliament group is dedicated to discussing the work of the Parliament and its committees: the lawmaking process, policies, debates, current events, academic studies commissioned by the committees, working documents and the final legal documents waiting to be voted on by the members.

Together with the Commission and the Council, the Parliament creates the laws and policies that govern Europe.

The Parliament does not have the power to initiate new laws, but since the Lisbon Treaty was introduced in December 2009 it has an equal voice to that of the Council of the European Union in approving legislation. « less
