Cover Letters : Are they useful ?

Electrical Engineer interested in opportunities in Digital Circuit Design/Verification, Applications Engineering, IoT

Hello Recruiters,

I was wondering what your views are about including cover letters when applying for a position on the Intel career website. I've heard varying opinions about this in general and wanted to know how Intel approaches this. With the increase in competition, and heaps of applications, I've heard from people at various companies that cover letters, more often that not, don't get read by the recruiters/hiring managers. Is it useful to include one ?

Thanks!

I've said it a few times before, but it's worth saying again. :) At Intel, don't waste your time doing cover letters. They rately even get opened. Focus on having an amazing resume and that is really what the recruiters look at. I've seen people write cover letters for every job they apply for. It gets so confusing for recruiters, it's almost easier just to bypass your profile and move on to the next. Seriously, put all of your energy in a good resume and you'll do fine at Intel. Now, that said, I do hear rumor that much smaller companies like a cover letter... so don't stop doing them for other companies. Just know it's not necessary at Intel. :)

Oh, no worries! It's hard to keep track of all the threads. This one tends to come up quite a bit and I just feel bad when I have seen students pour so many hours into cover letters that really never get opened.

Thank you Stephany .Was applying for Intel and googled "Does Intel look for cover letters" and landed up here :)
I find a lot of mechanical design jobs at Intel and it is really tedious to write cover letters for everyone.

Thanks Ms. Peery for the clarification. I always used to think that cover letter is what makes you stand out from the piles of resumes.
