“Cool Chain” refers to a subset of the total supply chain involving the production, storage and distribution of products that require some level of temperature control in order to retain their key characteristics and associated value e.g. food, drugs or flowers.

Variations in temperature or humidity can transform modern medical miracles into useless materials and oppose threats on the food we eat.

Billions of dollars are at risk as perishables move through the global chain. As up to 30% of fresh produce is wasted and 8% of drugs sold worldwide is counterfeit, the stakes are high; brand integrity, customer confidence, compliance and market share are all at risk in the fragile Cool Chain.

The Cool Chain Association is a non-profit organization with the aim of synchronizing the cool supply chain in order to improve the quality of perishables and temperature sensitive products (PTSP) and thus prolong their shelf life and reduce wastage.

As a result, the CCA and its members with the certification experts Germanischer Lloyd created the cold chain logistics quality standard, the Cool Chain Quality Indicator (CCQI). This standard is the first ever attempt to set standards for the entire logistic industry in the handling of PTSP and covers the complete cool chain from production to retail store shelf.

Our members are international companies and institutions, all of whom are active in the cold supply chains. « less
