Cells are the building blocks of tissues and undergo dynamic rearrangements and changes in shape and motility during human embryonic development; abnormalities in these processes underlie some birth defects and diseases such as cancer. It is important that scientists and clinicians fully appreciate the structure and dynamic behavior of cells. And cells from a variety of organisms contribute to our knowledge of human cell biology. The database will include images acquired from current collections, publications, and by recruitment. Contributions are welcome.

The Cell aims to have a significant impact on research in health-related fields, an impact comparable to the changes wrought by access to a library of genome sequence data. This will be aided by The Cell’s utility for scientists, clinicians, and others in furthering their full appreciation of the structure and dynamic behavior of cells from a variety of organisms. This will help them contribute to our knowledge of human cell biology.

The Library effort represents not only the creation of the electronic infrastructure, but also a systematic protocol for acquisition, evaluation, annotation, and uploading of images, videos, and animations. « less
