This group is aimed to stimulate international cooperation in the field of audiovisual heritage. Audiovisual heritage is about sounds and images as a source of history of the last 150 years and of the importance of preserving them and making them accessible to whoever is interested in their content.

Since the end of the 19th Century mankind started using audiovisual media to preserve memories. For many centuries visual art and writing have been the major media to preserve our memories. However, in our modern time audiovisual media have become the strongest form to record life and share our daily experiences with other people. The last decade have shown a massive increase of audiovisual material. Rapidly, audiovisual media have become part of everyday life. Today the recording and distributing of sound and moving images is not anymore the privilege of professionals but within hand-reach of ordinary people.

In 2001 an European survey named Presto concluded that for EU broadcast archives alone, the estimate amount of audio, film and video material.was in the order of 50 million hours! Now, 20 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute..
Nowadays, we are aware of the importance of preserving audiovisual content for reuse in the future. Through digital systems we're now able to preserve audiovisual content for the long term. Still, to guarantee long-term preservation many issues have to be taken care off. The huge variety in media formats and ever changing digital technology is one example. Another important example is the need for indexation of the massive audiovisual content.

The Audiovisual Heritage Network is aimed to exchange knowledge and best practices and to initiate and stimulate new projects in this field. « less
