Patti I LOVE this topic for discussion! As someone who is looking to incorporate much more of a meat-free diet into her life, I can't wait to hear what folks have to share.

    Thank you for starting this...

By the way, I just discovered and confirmed that I am sensitive to soy products. What would you recommend as an alternative? I also don't tolerate whey protein and have recently had to give up my morning soy protein shake. I'm looking for an alternative to a quick morning protein option (besides quinoa, eggs and such)...any suggestions?

    hi Anke,

You may find Dr Mercola's website useful for your question- he has some excellent suggestions.
Regarding Patti's question: I am not a vegetarian but have often considered this question as many of my friends and family are. My daughter often takes food with her to parties etc just in case and I make sure that I consider vegetarians when planning meals or party food. At least it is much more main stream now so we all think more in line with the philosophy, and also have much more choice in offering tasty food to our guests. 10 years ago, it really didn't cross my mind much.

I am totally intrigued by raw food diets - that is something I find hard to accomodate but am aiming more and more that way.

    thanks for the topic, Patti!

Anke: I second the Mercola site and recommend searching for gluten-free alternatives. Search engines seem to provide better results for recipes.

I'm Vegan and have had pretty good luck with dining with friends. I just state upfront that I'm Vegan, that my needs are simple and that I'm also happy to bring my own food and join in the fun. I did try the raw food diet - briefly - I think I jumped in too completely and boy was I sick.

There are all sorts of reasons to be a vegetarian. I was a vegetarian for a time. I have also tried a variety of other diet alternatives over the years. When all is said and done, I have to say that proper exercise has done more for me emotionally and physically than any diet I have ever tried.

Anke - how do you feel about hummus? Hummus and veggies in the morning might be a good place to start. Hummus on potatoes is one of my favorites. Beans in general, are high in protein. Baked beans on sprouted grain bread/toast sounds yummy! I'll often have raw nuts in the morning to start my day with the trifecta of protein, fat, and fiber.

    I hope that helps!

Great to hear input here! Thanks for sharing!

BTW - I wasn't suggesting hummus for your smoothie! :P

You could add peanutbutter or ground flax though.
