World Relief began in 1944 when leading American denominations realized they had a unique means of addressing the needs of war-torn Europe. Since those early years, World Relief has grown significantly. Most of our projects are located in regions where complex disasters (war, pandemics and natural disasters) combine with poverty to leave people hungry, homeless and hopeless. We are present in twenty countries. Most recently, we have mobilized to help survivors of the Asia Tsunami and recent earthquakes, Sudanese refugees in Chad, displaced people in Darfur and South Sudan, earthquake victims in Pakistan, and hurricane Katrina survivors. Since 1979, congregations and World Relief staff have welcomed more than 213,000 refugees to the U.S. There are twenty-four resettlement offices in the United States. Currently, the organization’s work focuses primarily on four key areas: Disaster Response, Health and Social Development, Refugee Resettlement and Economic Development. Working in over twenty countries, World Relief is recognized as a leading organization in crisis and post-crisis community development. World Relief economic development programs are integral in helping clients build assets and reduce vulnerability. Our programs provide access to finance, business training, agriculture development and marketing opportunities.
