The University of Oulu is an international science community, whose
core strength lies in multidisciplinary research and high-quality education
based on it. Although its academic offerings span over 70 disciplines,
the university’s concentrated research policy channels the efforts of
researchers into the focus areas of: Biosciences and Health, Information Technology,
Environment, Natural Resources and Materials, and Cultural Identity and Interaction.
The University of Oulu's tasks include promoting free research, education and culture
and strengthening the national competence base to improve competitiveness
and well-being. In addition, the university strives to ensure
the availability of a well-qualified academic labour force and researcher
base.
Founded in 1958, the University of Oulu is among the largest in
Finland and has an exceptionally wide scientific base. In its activities,
the university draws on the quality and breadth of its scientific programmes,
state-of-the-art research and educational technology, close
ties with business and industry and strong enterprise agenda, not to
mention its contact network involving hundreds of national and international
scientific and educational institutes and organizations.
