The University of Nottingham, described by The Sunday Times University Guide 2011 as ‘the embodiment of the modern international university’, has award-winning campuses in the United Kingdom, China and Malaysia. It is ranked in the UK's Top 10 and the World's Top 75 universities by the Shanghai Jiao Tong (SJTU) and the QS World University Rankings, placing it in the top 1% of all universities worldwide. This year (2011) it has climbed rankings published in the Complete University Guide, the Guardian University Guide, and The Times Good University Guide.
The University of Nottingham is research-intensive and has contributed to a number of other significant scientific advances, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), micropropogation techniques and the in vitro culture of plants. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise found 60 per cent of Nottingham's research to be "world-leading" or "internationally excellent" and Nottingham is also in the top four universities in Britain for the amount of research income received, being awarded over £150 million in research contracts for the 2009-2010 academic year. Entry is extremely competitive and the university is ranked within the top 75 in the world and the top 25 in Europe.
