Shelton State Community College is entering its fourth decade of service as a premier example of Alabama’s community colleges in Tuscaloosa, the state, and beyond.
The Alabama State Board of Education established Shelton State in 1979. In 1994, the College consolidated with C. A. Fredd State Technical College, another local two-year institution also designated as one of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Today Shelton State continues the specific HBCU mission of promoting educational access and opportunity for all students in a culturally diverse community.
The College is accredited regionally to award the Associate in Arts Degree, the Associate in Science Degree, and the Associate in Applied Science Degree. Shelton State also offers two types of certificate programs: certificate programs 30-60 semester hours in length and short-term certificate programs 9-29 semester hours in length.
A vital link to the West Alabama community, some of the College’s contributions include: distinction as the Alabama Community College of the Fine Arts; partnering with the business community through The West Alabama Center for Workforce Development; excelling in the provision of adult education via initiatives like GED and Career Readiness Credential preparation, graduation exam help, and skills remediation; providing many personal interest offerings such as dance, academic enrichment, computer skills and exercise to all ages through Community Education and Lifelong Learning; and a rich student life that includes annual success in intercollegiate athletics and student organizations like Shelton Ambassadors, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, student publications, and the Student Action Team.
