SYHA, or SYHA Hostelling Scotland, is a charity with a purpose fundamentally educational - but it is also one of the largest providers of internationally available accommodation in Scotland.
Founded in 1931, it is a non-profit membership organisation, registered both as a Scottish charity and as a company limited by guarantee. Its purpose is to help people, particularly those younger in years or in spirit, to knowledge, especially of all things Scottish; and it does this through the provision of low cost accommodation. All hostels adhere to quallty standards monitored by Visit Scotland, the Scottish Tourist Board, and are inexpensive, safe and clean.
Membership and use of the hostels is open to all, whether on a continuing or a temporary basis. Hostelling Scotland has hostels of its own spread right across Scotland, from the Borders and Galloway, to Sutherland and the North Coast, as well as in the major islands such as Skye. It also has a network of affiliate hostels, which widen the choice available to members and visitors.
SYHA is the representative in Scotland of the International Youth Hostels Federation (IYHF), today known as Hostelling International, the body which coordinates the work of national hostelling associations across the world and opens to members a chain of more than 4000 hostels in over 80 countries.
