Qtel (short for Qatar Telecom) is a diversified telecommunications company with a presence in 17 countries, providing voice and data services to more than 60 million customers.
It was successfully launched on the Doha Securities Market in 1998 and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1999, the Bahrain Stock Exchange in 2001 and the Abu Dhabi Securities Market in 2002.
The company has publically committed to expansion in the MENA region, where it is currently the largest telecommunications company by number of operations (ten operations as of 2010), and South East Asia.
Qtel provides mobile telephone services in Oman via Nawras, a joint venture with TDC and Omani partners. In November 2006, Qtel announced an agreement to acquire a strategic stake in NavLink, a leading provider of managed data services to businesses in the Middle East. Qtel holds an equity stake (38.2%) in the business.
In November 2006, The Emir issued Law No 34 of 2006 restructuring the administration of information and communication systems in Qatar and lifting Qtel's monopoly and ictQATAR was announced as the new telecoms regulator.
Towards the end of 2007, Qtel announced the launching of a new company named wi-Tribe. wi-tribe is a joint venture between Qtel and A.A. Tukri Group of Companies (ATCO) of Saudi Arabia. Through wi-tribe, Qtel plans to launch wireless broadband internet services across Asia and Africa. The first wi-tribe deployment was in Jordan and was launched in 2008, followed by operations in Pakistan and the Philippines.
In 2008, Qtel purchased a 40.8 percent stake in Indonesia's PT Indosat, which it increased to 65 percent in 2009, after completing a tender offer on February 18 to buy additional shares in the company from the public.
