Located in Shenzhen, China, Peking University School of Transnational Law is the first law school in mainland China to offer a traditional western-style Juris Doctor (J.D.) curriculum alongside a Chinese-style Juris Master (J.M.) curriculum. The school was started in 2008 by special authorization of the Chinese government and is located on the graduate campus of Peking University, one of the oldest and largest universities in China. The chancellor and founding dean of the school is Jeffrey Lehman, former President of Cornell University and former Dean of the University of Michigan Law School.
STL's four-year program includes JD courses that are taught exclusively in English by American and international faculty and JM courses that are taught in Chinese by Chinese faculty. The school is focused on preparing students to become lawyers versed in international law and cross-border transactions, particularly as China's role in the global economy expands. The school is pursuing accreditation through the American Bar Association, which, if accepted, would make STL the first ABA-accredited law school outside North America
