The OPF's mission is to ensure that its members around the world are able to meet their digital preservation challenges with a solution that is widely adopted and actively being practiced by national heritage organisations and beyond.
The OPF will play a central role in gathering and managing the requirements of its members and the wider digital preservation community. It will define products and solutions that can be deployed by third parties into scalable and sustainable services.
It will engage the research community to carry out research and development and to design new experiments. OPF will also be involved in externally funded research and development projects where its main focus will be to ensure that new
technologies meet stakeholders’ requirements and can be taken into practice. OPF will play an active role in further developing and evolving open source components from research and development projects into a comprehensive FOSS middleware stack.
A key role for OPF will be to facilitate and actively foster communities and partnerships that are imperative to achieving the OPF mission and are aligned with its vision.
