The Nova Scotia Barristers' Society is the governing body for the legal profession in Nova Scotia. Under the provisions of the Legal Profession Act, the Society is responsible for both the licensing and discipline of the profession.
As defined in the LPA, the purpose of the Society is to uphold and protect the public interest in the practice of law. In pursuing its purpose, the Society:
- establishes standards for the qualifications of those seeking the privilege of membership in the Society;
- establishes standards for the professional responsibility and competence of members; and
- regulates the practice of law in the province.
