You might not have heard of us but we are sure you will have come across the many products that we have helped develop. Did you know that the iconic brand Ribena only uses blackcurrants bred by us? Or that we breed potatoes for Walkers crisps and McCain frozen fries? Or that one of the stars of TV's " History Cold Cases " works for us? Not only that, but the eggs with elevated levels of omega-3 you buy from your local supermarket may have been analysed by us. Well who are we? We are Mylnefield Research Services Ltd (MRS), a subsidiary of the Scottish Crop Research Institute (SCRI) based in Dundee. SCRI is a world leading research centre for plant and environmental sciences. We have developed successful businesses analysing lipids (or oils and fats to you and me). We also analyse stable isotopes. If you really want to know what these are, then contact us directly, but suffice it to say, they are very small and can tell you whether a bottle of Scotch whisky or French wine is authentic or counterfeit. They can also help indentify corpses by analysing hair and fingernail samples and thereby being able to tell where in the world that person had lived and for how long. We also breed new varieties of crops. The scientists at SCRI have been at the forefront of developments in plant genetics that we are now putting into practise. You will find 9 varieties of potatoes bred by us in supermarkets as well as raspberries, blackberries, swedes and occasionally strawberries.
