Since its founding in 2003, KID HEALTHY has been implementing exciting nutrition and fitness programs that target low-income children and their families in Southern California: Steps to Healthy Living Campaign, Padres en Acción, and Cooking Up Change.
With over 50 years serving communities, Jackie Teichmann created KID HEALTHY as a means to address the increasing number of obese children she'd served with a previous childhood diabetes organization. She knew that something must and could be done to prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cancer, and other diseases that threaten the quality of life of children and their families.
Working in collaboration with 20+ agencies including ABC7, Aetna Foundation, Northgate Markets, CalOptima, Albertons/Sav-On, Network for a Healthy California, and L.A. Care Health Plan, KID HEALTHY has put into place three programs aimed to encourage children and their parents to make healthy food choices and increase their physical activities, along with improving the accessibility and affordability of healthy and fresh foods. To date, KID HEALTHY has impacted over 600,000 students, parents, and teachers in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura, and San Diego counties.
One in three children are overweight or obese in Southern California and it’s up to organizations like us to empower low-income students and their families to move more, eat better, and make healthy choices!
