FURNAS is a public limited corporation founded on February 28th, 1957, according to Decree nr. 41.066. This Decree gave the Company authorization to build Brazil's first hydroelectric power plant of huge size.
A subsidiary of ELETROBRÁS, at a regional level, FURNAS has the mission of
constructing and operating electric Power plants to cover supra-state needs, as well as operating high and extra-high Power transmission systems, aiming at integrating inter-states systems or transporting energy produced by bi-national energy projects.
The Company has a diverse energy generating park, with an installed capacity of 9,292 MW, comprising ten hydroelectric plants and two conventional thermal plants in operation.
FURNAS vast transmission lines system has an extension of 18,717 km, including Pioneer circuits of 765 kV and of ± 600 kV DC of the Itaipu System. The whole transmission system operates with a 91,797 MVA transforming capacity, distributed in 43 substations.
The Itaipu System transmits Power from Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant (12,600 MW) to the Southern, Southeastern, Midwestern and Northern regions of the Country.
The Company supplies energy to the Southeastern and the Midwestern regions,
where 48% of the Brazilian population concentrates and that respond for 65% of the Country's GDP.
