Charleston Area Medical Center was created in 1972 as a result of a merger between Charleston General Hospital and Charleston Memorial Hospital. These two hospitals had a well-established history of caring for patients in the region since the late 1800s.
In 1986, the former Kanawha Valley Hospital was acquired and became what is now CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital, West Virginia’s only freestanding children’s hospital.
