cApStAn Linguistic Quality Control (LQC) is an independent linguistic Quality Assurance and Quality Control organisation specialising in translation, adaptation, and verification of materials adapted for use in large-scale multilingual projects. We have core staff of 10 linguists, and a network of over 90 high-profile expert verifiers which it trains, coordinates and supervises; all are experienced translators and/or teachers; all have one or several higher education degrees, mostly in philology, translation, sociology or educational science; and all have acquired experience in verifying data collection instruments and in documenting their interventions in a standardised way.
Proofreading and linguistic expertise forms only part of the skills needed to meet required quality standards. Verifiers are aware that they are checking a very specific translation, both for linguistic correctness (spelling, phraseology, syntax, grammar) and for equivalence (level of difficulty of the items, register, psychometric properties, layout) of the respective national version with the international source version. Necessity and appropriateness of national adaptations are also stressed as a key aspect.
