Behind the Book is a school-based literacy non-profit working to excite children and young adults about reading in order to build literacy skills and nurture a new generation of informed, empowered and active citizens. We believe that every student deserves the freedom that comes from the ability to read and think independently, and we are committed to providing youth with opportunities to reach their potential.
Working in the Kindergarten-12th grades, we bring authors and their books into individual classrooms to build literacy skills, engage students and develop a new generation of book readers. Our programs occur during school hours, are part of the class curriculum and meet both NY State Learning Standards and the NYC Blueprint for the Arts. We incorporate multiple author and illustrator visits over the course of a semester which culminate in writing-based projects. Our programs include book and art supply donations to students, classrooms and school libraries, field trips that bring books and school lessons to life and professional development for teachers.
