Apna Ghar (Our Home) fosters safe, stable, and positive family relations free from domestic violence. Our mission is to empower women and children from South Asian and other communities by providing comprehensive, multicultural services and shelter.
Company History:
Apna Ghar was founded by five Asian American women who established a domestic violence hotline in response to unmet needs in the community. At its incorporation in January 1990, Apna Ghar became one the first domestic violence agencies in the United States to address the cultural and linguistic barriers that prevent South Asian victims of family violence from reaching out for help.
Today Apna Ghar’s work extends beyond the South Asian community, as we have created a model for domestic violence programs serving clients from marginalized, immigrant populations. Not only do our current clients reflect the diversity of the Chicago metropolitan area, but our staff also provides training and technical assistance, nationally and internationally, to organizations serving victims of domestic violence from underserved communities.
