Anchor House is based in London's East End in Canning Town, just a few miles from the Olympic site, Canary Wharf, the 02 Dome and London City Airport, but it has historically been an area blighted by under-development and extreme poverty.
We started life as a seamen's hostel in the 1960s. When the London docks were shut down Anchor House began to transform itself from a seedy, rundown hostel to a nationally acclaimed residential/life skills centre providing accommodation for up to 180 single homeless people every year.
To complement the launch in 2005 of an ambitious £15.9 capital appeal for a much needed refurbishment of the 50 year old building (£6m has since been secured) we have developed an award winning service provision model, our Aspirations Programme which incorporates rehabilitation, medical care, recreational activities and volunteering. We also offer accredited vocational training programmes.
• 2008 – 2009 over 300 homeless individuals (residents) stayed at Anchor House
• 2008 – 2009 over 90% of residents were involved in positive transitional activities.
• 2009 - 32 residents moved on to independent living monitored over 6 months
• 2009 - 39 residents found jobs, monitored over 6 months, which is way above the industry average.
