Right now, one in every four third graders in Minnesota does not read at grade level. Minnesota Reading Corps is taking action. A statewide initiative to help every Minnesota child become a successful reader by the end of third grade, Reading Corps places AmeriCorps members as literacy tutors in elementary schools and preschools. In Minnesota, where the achievement gap is among the widest, these tutors implement research-based literacy instruction to catch kids up to their peers. Reading Corps strategies are designed for both preschool-aged students and K–3rd grade students.
Reading Corps literacy tutors change worlds every single school year. In fact, they’ll change 20,000 worlds in 2011-12 alone. Tutors commit to 11 months of AmeriCorps service, and build their own professional skills while they make an impact in their communities. Reading Corps members can choose to serve in a preschool setting or a Kindergarten – 3rd grade setting.
