DELA is an abbreviation for “Draagt Elkanders LAsten”, which means “carry each others burdens”. DELA, established in 1937, helps people with funeral insurances and services. Together with its daughter companies, DELA owns 70 crematoria and funeral centers in the Netherlands. It is a non-profit cooperation, owned by its policyholders. DELA, with HQ in Eindhoven, is market leader in Holland as well as in Belgium, with over three million policyholders. The organization has almost 1.500 employees and their balanced total is about 3.5 billion euros of which 745 million euros is capital and reserves.
DELA was founded to end the habit to burry people according to their social status. In 1937, times of social and economic crisis, most people could not afford a proper funeral. If the family could not afford a burial, the deceased was buried anonymously in a corner of the cemetery. The founding fathers of DELA made it possible for the poor to have a proper funeral at low costs. Policyholders automatically became owner of this non-profit cooperation. The initiative was such a success that already in the fifties DELA became the largest funeral insurance and caretaker organization. Togetherness, involvement and integrity were (and still are) key-elements of DELA’s identity.
The main part of DELA’s insurances is in kind funeral insurances. DELA provides additional insurances which are attached to the in kind insurances, to enable people to fulfill their own wishes at a burial. Besides that, DELA provides a to-die-risk-insurance that covers e.g. income losses in situation when one dies before a certain date. The benefit can also be used for e.g. continuing school careers for children. The main part of their services is in funeral services. DELA also provides surviving dependants practical (administrative) assistance after a funeral, to help family members to carry on with their lives as good as possible, given the circumstances of grief.
