The University of Portsmouth (UoP) was inaugurated as a university in 1992. Prior to this It was a Polytechnic. Its origins can be traced to the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and Arts, founded in 1869. UoP is now a medium-sized institution of 19,155 students.
