Longs Drug Stores Corporation, through its subsidiaries, provides retail drug and pharmacy benefit management services in the United States. It operates in two segments, Retail Drug Stores and Pharmacy Benefit Services. The Retail Drug Store segment sells prescription drugs and general merchandise. Its general merchandise includes over-the-counter medications, health and beauty products, cosmetics, photo and photo processing, convenience food and beverage items, and greeting cards. This segment also offers housewares, and automotive and sporting goods; and immunizations and health screening services, such as blood, glucose, osteoporosis, stroke, and cholesterol testing, as well as operates a mail order pharmacy business. The Pharmacy Benefit Services segment provides services, including plan design and implementation, claims administration, and formulary management to third-party health plans and various organizations. This segment also offers prescription drug benefit plans to Medicare participants. As of January 25, 2007, the company operated 509 retail drug stores; and managed prescription benefit plans covering approximately 7.1 million lives. Longs Drug Stores Corporation was founded in 1938 and is based in Walnut Creek, California.
