Ever since Bel Air Presbyterian Church was established in 1956 it has been known as a church deeply committed to Christ, His people, and to caring for the world. As you look at the mission statements of the last fifty years, there has been a refining and enriching of the same great mission.
In the early years Dr. Louis Evans organized and founded a church upon God’s love in Christ for others. From the decades of the 1960s to the 1980s, the theme was “The Hill, The City, The World.” Under Dr. Donn Moomaw’s leadership the church was built upon the three step mission of strengthening the church home on Mulholland, and then reaching into the heart of Los Angeles and then overseas missions. During the 1990s the mission was “Proclaiming Christ, Called to Holiness, and Empowered to Serve.” Under Dr. Michael Wenning’s leadership the three fold calls of sharing Christ, living a holy life, and lovingly serving others was nurtured even further.
Now under Dr. Mark Brewer’s vision, we are about the bold mission of "Making Los Angeles the Greatest City for Christ.” What that means is we are joyfully taking our call to be city changers to the next level. We prayerfully and diligently work to make Los Angeles a city where God is honored and all the people live in place of peace and prosperity. A city where the Church reaches to the poor and rich alike. It’s a huge goal. But, the Lord willing, if it happened to the decadent capital of the Roman Empire, it can happen in Los Angeles! We are situated in a unique place in a unique city. They make the laws in Washington DC. They make the culture here in Los Angeles.
Building upon a half century of faithful men and women serving the Risen Christ, it’s our turn to be God’s agents of healing, redemption and reconciliation. Just like our predecessors, we know any mission is only as strong as “Base Camp.” Therefore, we want to create a spiritual home on Mulholland that equips Christians for today’s complex and tough challenges.
