The tank barges transport chemicals, petroleum, edible oils, and other liquid commodities. This segment principally serves industrial and agricultural companies. Manufacturing segment designs and manufactures barges and other vessels for third-party customers and for its inland river transportation business, as well as manufactures equipment for coastal and offshore markets with inland marine technology. In addition, its Jeffboat facility offers marine design and manufacturing services for inland and ocean service vessels. The company also provides third party logistic through its BargeLink LLC joint venture, as well as container transportation services between Chicago and New Orleans. In addition, it offers fleeting, shifting, cleaning, and repair services for barges and towboats of third-party customers, as well as operates cargo transfer facility terminals between various modes of transportation. As of December 31, 2006, American Commercial Lines operated 3,010 barges, including approximately 2,289 covered dry cargo barges, 350 open dry cargo barges, and 371 liquid cargo tank barges in its domestic fleet; and 120 dry cargo barges.
