Alliance Atlantis Communications, Inc. engages in broadcasting, creating, and distributing filmed entertainment content. It operates in three segments: Broadcasting, Entertainment, and Motion Picture Distribution. The Broadcasting segment owns and operates 13 Canadian specialty channels, which include Showcase, Slice, History Television, HGTV Canada, Food Network Canada, Showcase Action, Showcase Diva, National Geographic Channel, BBC Canada, BBC Kids, Discovery Health Channel, IFC Canada, and Fine Living. This segment also has a 50% interest in two Canadian French-language specialty television channels, and a minority interest in three other English-language specialty channels. The Entertainment segment co-owns and co-produces the CSI franchise, in partnership with CBS Productions. It also distributes the CSI franchise in various territories outside the United States. In addition, this segment acquires and distributes television programs, as well as licenses its entertainment library of approximately 1,000 titles representing approximately 5,500 hours of programming rights to broadcasters, distributors and other users worldwide. The Motion Picture Distribution segment distributes motion pictures for theatrical release in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Spain. It also licenses rights to motion pictures and television programs, to conventional and specialty broadcasters; sells and rents DVDs of motion pictures and made-for-television programming; and exhibits motion pictures through its cinemas.
