1> Know your audience is step #1 - how might they look you up? 95% of recruiters use LinkedIn. They search for specialty, position and your current state of employment. Keywords used in LinkedIn are just as important as they are for search engines.

2> Connect with as many contacts as possible! Use the Add Connections for Colleagues and Classmates to find people that don't immediately come to mind. Upload an address book in the Add Connections area as well and connect with those people who have a LinkedIn icon next to their name.

3> Every time a connection occurs, make sure to send a personal message to that connection inquiring if they may know of someone looking for an intern and what you're availability is. By all means, be personal and ask them how they're doing too!

4> Use the status updates to tell your story and be inspiring. The contacts that 'like' or 'comment' on your updates are sharing your name with their contacts! It's a key way to start opening up some dialogues, and being 'visible' on an extended basis.

Hope this help, Kin! Good luck!

I would say you have started on the first step - make yourself known by participating.

Many people have LinkedIn profiles, however only a very small percentage are active participants in the community.

The "Answers" forum is a great place to start. Ask some timely and well thought out questions. Give back by answering some questions that demonstrate your professional capacity. Your questions and your answers speak loudly about who you are.

I agree with the above suggestions, especially the one about Q & A. I have gotten contacts and Best Answers that way, and enjoy answering other people's questions (and sometimes posing my own).

I also suggest joining relevant groups (alumni, job interest, and location-based--where you want to work). I joined the LinkedMinnesota group even before I moved here and started making contacts. More than half of my contacts are in MN. This group has in-person networking events, which are nice. Good luck.

My suggestion is to participate in the Q&A section. Asking & answering questions can get more visible in Linkedin.

Clarification added February 5, 2011:

I meant to say asking & answering questions can make you more visible in Linkedin. My apologizes for the error.

You can gain in visibility by participating to Q&A and to groups. Do not forget that the quality of comments in more important than the quantity. The quality of your comments will show your skills level, the ideas you are developing.
A complete profile with your professional experiences and the key element of your competences will contribute also to appear in a selection query.
