What types of business insights and discussion tools would you like to see from the CNBC/LinkedIn collaboration?

CNBC and LinkedIn are pleased to announce a strategic collaboration, and its main goal is to serve you better. As the CNBC and LinkedIn teams work to deliver an initial set of business information and discussion tools over the coming weeks, we’d love to hear your ideas on what you’d like to have come out of our collaboration.

What are some of the things you’d like to see?

While LINKEDIN has been great for connecting to new contacts and reconnecting with colleages or friends we may have lost touch with in our travels, what I keep hearing out here is that more and more online-preneurs, solo-preneurs, entrepreneurs and sales folk want streamlined marketing solutions with their dose of networking activities.

So if CNBC can capture a star or two, on a regular basis, through LI -- that would certainly be a boost to the new partnership and LI users.

Another brainstorming solution could be for the new partnership to hire a sampling of LI users for a idea-jamming session which could follow an 'unconference' format or a traditional 'facilitated' round robin format.

Good luck with the new venture:)

Clarification added September 4, 2008:

In chatting about this throughout the day - here's what my offline network came up with:
1. Make LINKEDIN/CNBC a daily first-point-of-destination by providing a dashboard that includes:
a) high quality video downloads/embed links on business and news topics
b) a BIG IDEA forum
c) an Evite-like interface (of sorts) to easily and effortlessly invite one's groups and network to events.
d) daily newswire 'pips' (a new slang term for "TOM-Awareness" that we could filter and customize to our major industry.
e) Make room for the newcomer (what we at Network Abundance humbly called: The Next Generation of Masters, a year ago) and make space for a rapidly growing entry point for new talent in topical exchange vs. the Suze Orman CAN I AFFORD IT show where she recently told someone to buy or borrow her book(s) and 'stay away' from financial consultants because they are a rip-off and only want to 'get rich off of people' (so what is she then, if not a 'financial coach who got rich off of viewers/readers? = LOL:) -- (CNBC video link below)...
f) A barometer and voting sector on "expertise" - right now it's a numbers game on LI; is that the intent or just the default/result? Expert answers should be a result of the opinion of the reader, not the originator (if we choose world leaders through the voting process of the majority, why would LI be any different...? one could even "ask oneself", that with the expert ranking system that exists on LI today -- are we ranking experts by their 'lack' of billable hours and excess of 'extra time' or by their true contribution to someone else's honest question -- "it's worth" thinking about:) - PS: One can't be a #1 ranked linked in-expert, by today's standards, and a growing concern, without spending 'geez-gads' extra hours "at work" -- we've tested it "a-lot" lately:)
g) appeal to Gen X *&* Y -- why? Because that's who is using or who you need to have use (for sustainability) your premium services.
h) categorize stuff by Gen: X,Y and Z and figure out what Z is really up to and who they really are and what they're really all about - then move quickly in GEN AA (of which an acronym has already been created, historically, to deal with the fallout, ideals, nonsense and fantasies of Gen T,U, V, W, X, Y and Z ) -- e.g., move forward and create something really cool that adds value to everyone who lives online (and the numbers are growing - exponentially - everyday)...

Fair Share: Quite a cool venue LI has built - and I am certainly an LI fan when it comes to promoting the only network (that we have researched and worked through here) that has truly garnered the respect of people around the world who "use their brain" -- most of the time -- and forgive those who lapse in thinking from 'time to time'... but who have one constant: LI is a very special professional space - online.
Professionals and wanna-bee's gravitate toward LI -- frankly after researching all of them -- we have no clue why anyone would Facebook, Squidoo, MySpace or "Re-do" if they are truly in sync with connecting to the professional people who have truly been a part of their Reality career/life, while searching out (and rather creatively, at times) new connections that make sense at an intellectual and market-worthy level (the combination of 'intellectual' and 'market worthy' is really "darn" close to what "a-lot" of people out there (today) are calling: "spiritual" (with a highly commercial twist that spells: R.E.V.E.N.U.E)
Thinking of your next partnership? Think like NING! We use NING, and while it could be streamlined, it provides extra tech -- a combo of NINg and LI and CNBC and (dare I say?: Google or Yahoo) could be unstoppable -- to be sure:) Take great care... this has been a fun day in the SF Bay Area -- hope you agree... "now get out there today and share the Abundance!"
:)

This collaboration makes great sense!! CNBC is always full of up to the minute information, whether it is a news story or a discussion about business markets. Since I use LI for many reasons, I would love to be able to get 'news I can use' during the course of the day.
Example: Home Depot is a target client, and today thru various sources, I learn they are searching for new representation for their gazillion dollar ad budget. This 'news' could affect a decision from within, as it will become a 'wait and see'. Markets, trends, mergers, etc. are always important to those of us who connect with managers and executives on a daily basis using the site. I think the partnership is a great opportunity to stay
'on-site' and learn all you can about emerging markets, daily news concerns, and what is affecting our world, as we see it.

Since a great deal of the connections are marketing opportunities, it would be nice to see a ' Big Idea' concept with webinar capabilities. LinkedIn
users could also have a link to CNBC that would specify 'LI User' and
have priority messaging inbound. CNBC would take on the roll of advisor, or a source for relevant up to the minute information regarding the ever changing news that affects all of us, daily.
Great Team.

I'm sure you have several areas of collaboration that have been discussed and planned prior to the deal and will get more suggestions.

The Linkedin community has appeal to many users like myself because it is is aimed at connecting individuals and groups of professionals. The obvious answer is to extend or 'bubble up' expert opinions, group efforts, and event exposure to broader audience of CNBC.

CNBC can do that through columns or video interviews taken from 'best of answers' of the Q&A. Highlights or interviews with groups might be considered.

CNBC has extensive web media capabilities that could be taken advantage of for professional round table discussions on current topics of interest. For example, in the area of next generation (NG) telecommunications which I am most familiar, Linkedin has several fellow analysts who can talk about NG WiMAX and LTE. A sub-topic is use of NG as a 'information super highway' and personal broadband social network to reduce dependency on energy and other environmental impacts. (see www.green4g.com).

Topics can be so far ranged to make focus a problem but the objective is to create vehicles to tap into the large number of professionals who can speak in-depth on current events and future developments of interest and importance.

Congratulations on this wonderful partnership! This couldn't be more perfect. Here is what I would like to see come out of this partnership -

1. When I am looking at my contacts, I want to look at company specific data / news in a sidebar. This must be about companies that my contacts are currently associated with.
2. All the company names across the website must be links to popup panels that display market data about those companies (performance, current stock price) etc.
3. Option of subscribing to market news alerts on the LinkedIn homepage or to my email inbox about specific companies that my specific contacts are associated with. This will make LinkedIn the one-stop shop instead of me having to configure such stuff on CNBC as well.
4. Live Chat with other members would be nice.
5. A place for contributing business articles / blogs

For sure, you could improve your ‘groups’ feature, in particular, by giving more structure (for instance, via forums, such as Xing …).

(Optionally) Pepping up the profiles with background information on the companies … at the side sounds interesting as well.

Another thing is that you could use CNBC to get more visibility and thus attract more users as well as making them interested in spending more time within linkedin.

After all:
Making this ‘polling’ is one nice step. However, I would highly recommend to get at least one requirements engineering expert involved. Understanding the needs, interests, … of your stakeholders is one thing (and this ‘polling’ is a good step, but it will only do part of it). Translating these ‘user needs’ into (technical) requirements for your CNBC/LinkedIn platform is a next step. Breaking them down into requirements for the individual components of your platform (including the pieces of your service / support / administration organizations …) is yet another. Keeping traceability between all those requirements is important as well. Finally, you should not forget to come up with test specifications to test everything. I mean, CNBC/LinkedIn is a big thing. Requirements Engineering approaches which have proven to work out well should be applied. You will get plenty of benefits :-)

I have been using linkedin for a few years now. I am very impressed with how this trusted business oriented networking site has evolved. There is a need for sharing the information to be as seamless within and outside both LinkedIn and CNBC as much as possible. Many can become participants if the draw bridge has not already been raised.

To a small degree, sharing information on LinkedIn is as easy as trafficking contraband within solitary confinement;)

Make the tools available so those of us who would aggressively share the information can!

Congratulations on shrewd, well-thought out business collaboration.

Please consider a “Look who’s talking” cross-promotional feature where CNBC shares highlighted LinkedIn discussions and contributes CNBC viewer e-mails to LinkedIn relevant topics.

This “open letter” could work very well after hours or on Fridays, for example.

Occasional themes could be promoted as well, such as Venture Capitalists, Entrepreneurs, Sales, and Financial Consultants.

Especially in this economy, give the little guys their due. Include alternative energy companies and micro cap companies. Ater all, LinkedIn was once a very small company too.

I find Linkedin to be the most efficient networking site I've tried, so I use it almost exclusively now, because like all of us, I've got limited time. I think most of us would like an easily accessible feature where we could present our own specific business solutions - for example, I'd tout the benefits of viral videos - while someone else might explain how to get credit in a down economy. Quick tidbits with good info and links.
