Second Edition of I'm on LinkedIn -- Now What??? - what do you recommend?

I'm working on the second edition of my LinkedIn book, which has sold more copies than I'd imagined it would - THANK YOU.

Anyway, I'm working on the second edition... I'm cleaning up grammar and word choice, and just cleaning up what is in the first edition, AND I'll introduce a number of new things.

I'm wondering, if you have read it, what would you like me to add, or emphasize more?

If you haven't read it, what key elements would you expect to see in it, and what would you like me to drill down on?

You can find a summary of the book on Amazon.com, or at http://www.happyabout.info/linkedinhelp.php

Thanks!

Jason,

Your first book was a great and easy read to help me understand the fundamentals of LinkedIn. In your new version, I believe you can condense the basics covered in your first book and put emphasis on the
1. Search capabilities.
2. Benefits of groups (especially with the new 50 groups limit); I just paired down from 61 to 49 and there were more I had intended to join which is still another matter for everyone. So a strategy discussion for joining groups would be beneficial.
3. Manners, best practices and methods (with examples) of verbiage one would place in invites to others to link.

Keep up the great work.

Bob

I thought the book was a great over-view on how to get started in LinkedIn. I would like to see more about search abilities but with that being said I am getting the book your recommended on LinkedIn for recruiters.

I think your book is great for beginners just wanting to get their profile on LinkedIn. Which everyone should do that! Thanks for all your hard work.

I think one thing you'll need to cover more in-depth is the new LinkedIn User Agreement and the consequences of it. I think there are both pros and cons.

On the one hand, it will potentially cut down even more on the practice of sending connection invitations to strangers, so that's a good thing. It means LinkedIn can potentially do a better job of delivering on its original value proposition.

On the other hand, it may mean we lose some valuable super-connectors in the network. It also means that anyone, even a paying customer, has the potential to lose their network data and access if they don't behave within the narrow confines of what LinkedIn deems acceptable. Based on past experience of seeing people do things that were perfectly reasonable, but then getting suspended by LinkedIn, I'm skeptical about this.

Anyway, I think now more than ever, it's important to give new users the message of "learn to use LinkedIn like it was intended before you start trying to push the envelope."

Hey Jason! Your book is a terrific overview of LinkedIn already! Obviously, though, you do need to cover the ins and outs of the new page layout. Beyond that, I agree with Scott Allen regarding invitations to strangers. As well, you might want to put a bit more emphasis on the etiquette of endorsements, as well as building good will by helping others first. I know these are networking fundamentals; yet, somehow, people tend to overlook them on LinkedIn (and other online networking sites). Look forward to the new edition! Best, Walter

Groups just announced some radical changes - you will want to see where the dsut settles on that before you finish up the new edition.

One change they already announced is that you have to chop out a bunch of groups so you only have 50 that you are a member of.

I dropped from 83 to 62 and now the choices are getting quite difficult.

I can't very well drop out of a group I run and I can't drop out of any of the groups where I am an officer or Board member of the real life group.

That only leaves a few groups that I can chose to belong to.

Hi Jason,

I just finished reading your book.

Only obvious typo was on p. 42 ("spammer" rather than "spanner"). Re: word choice, you ended sentences with a preposition a few times -- usually a hint to rearrange the sentence structure. I can provide specific examples if needed.

On page 102, you note that, if your book isn't hands-on enough, to check out Steve Tylock's book, The LinkedIn Personal Trainer. Would rather get this information from you. Still looking for the "definitive" book on LinkedIn -- this would seem to tie into your personal branding.

Loved Chapter 16 (Complementary Tools and Resources) and all of the footnote links. Do feel like those of us who've already bought the first book should be able to get an "upgrade" without shelling out another $19.95. Especially since this book was only 107 pages, many of which were recaps, testimonials, or large chunks of white space.

Would like to see an index in the back next time, as well as a lot more tips and tricks about finding job leads through LinkedIn.

An additional reference might be Jeffrey Gitomer's Little Black Book of Connections (see link below).

Best of luck,
Andy O'Hearn

I would suggest putting in a tear out sheet of "quick tips" that one could easily throw into a lap top bag to have with them while traveling. It'd be helpful to have a short summary to reference when I don't have the whole book with me!

Jason,

Talk about:
1. All the restrictions Linkedin has been implementing.
2. No customer service whatsoever
3. Limiting groups
4. Limiting how many invitations you can send out
5. Absolutely no transparency at all

I'd love it if you wrote a book called "I'm an Advanced LinkedIn User, Now What??" You could expand on all the super cool search tools, Q&A techniques and Groups.....

OR you could just come back to California on your next big book tour and give us some more great demo's and book signings.

Jason - I would support the comments in terms of the changes on Groups and how to get the most out of Groups.

More guidance in relation to using LinkedIn to manage through a downturn in the economy would be highly topical.

Also with the advent of other social networks and new media, how to integrate LinkedIn into your overall networking plan.

I would keep it focused on the newcomer to LinkedIn - there are still many people who don't have a profile here. Then if you felt it appropriate and you were energised to write it you could write volume 2 for the advanced user!

Best wishes

Hi Jason. I did read your book and thought that it was an excellent overview. I agree with some of the comments others have made in terms of offering insights into more advanced functionality. I have learned a great deal about LinkedIn, in large part thanks to you, but I would be interested in a LinkedIn "best practices" discussion. How are other smart people in a variety of professions and job functions/titles using LinkedIn to advance their business objectives. I think that a lot of people (particularly more advanced users) would benefit from a discussion of this nature particularly since there are many different LinkedIn approaches to be taken depending on your business and career objectives.
