When ordering your favorite cup of coffee…
...what do you say? There are so many combinations around the planet as to the kind of coffee, latte, chai…whatever. What do you say when you walk into your favorite coffee place to order YOUR favorite Cup of Joe? Also: different flavor for different mood? Or moment in the day?

I say macchiato.
My Machiavellian machination to uncover malpractice in blowhard baristas. Regrettably, most don't give a monkey's, many murmur "milk froth, right?" more mouth "Grande or regular?" and the crass cry "Caramel?".
An exquisite disappointment for any macho masochist. Truly, try it, bitter, sweet.

Frankly, Jacques, I save hundreds of dollars each year by just making my own at home, but on the infrequent occasions that I do go into Starbucks, I just get the coffee of the day. I will get some when on the road for a long drive, or maybe in the afternoon as part of a break from work.
I actually have gone in there and not even ordered coffee, sometimes just getting a sandwich. They tell me that I'm not that unusual anymore, as they offer decent food to go along with the Java infusion.

It is rare that I ever buy coffee when I am out and about. I drink enough at home. LOL But on those very rare occasions I usually just order a hot chai tea.
If people were to stop and add up all they spend on these drinks they would realize they could actually be taking a vacation instead. I used to work with a lady that bought two coffees each morning, one for the drive to work and one for at work. She was spending a minimum of 220.00 a month (that was in 1999, so its even more now) and had never once realized it. That adds up over time.

Espresso macchiato from Café Italia here in Montreal is the ideal.
Aside from that I look for a place that doesn't use water that's too hot, as that adversely affects the flavor of the coffee. Starbucks, second cup, etc.. all seem to have that burnt flavor that comes from water that is too hot.

Clarification added June 1, 2008:
The water you put on your coffee should not be boiling - cool it a little by leaving the kettle with the lid off for a minute, or add a tiny shot of cold water to the kettle before pouring it on. With espresso a correctly adjusted machine will deliver water at about 92 degrees. Too hot scalds the coffee and too cool just does not extract the flavour.

Aaaah, coffee! My + 20 potion of sleep resistence. A day without coffee is like, umm, sleep. I am pretty sure my blood type is Starbucks. If it were not for coffee, it is likely I would have no discernible personality.
I make my coffee so strong that it wakes the neighbor. I broke out my coffee roaster a while ago and started roasting green beans. They do stink to high heaven when they are roasting but the difference in a cup of espresso is palpable.
But sometimes, one must go out and obtain the coffee. Oh, the humanity!
If they actually have it, I go for the Turkish coffee and yes, I add all the grounds to the spoon and I eat them! If not, I want a latte made with half and half, double shot of espresso, no foam and sugar free syrup that depends on my mood.
I have measured out my life with coffee spoons. ~T.S. Eliot

At home - it's dark roast, an espresso or a cappuccino
Typically out and about - regular coffee of the day, black (I like coffee in my coffee) and it's from a local, small, independent coffee house (I try to support local businesses and avoid starbucks and other large chains if possible)
Occasionally when I'm craving something sweet out and about - regular, nonfat, mocha (again - not from starbucks)
When we visit family in Italy - Espresso per favore from any local bar or relatives house
When we visit family now living in the UK - what! no coffee - what kind of Italian are you? Ok - give me tea, I'll take earl grey please.

Well, when I'm not ordering my coffee by staring at my coffee pot begging it to brew faster.....I just go to the my local Convenience Store/Gas Station and fill my travel mug. At the register, I say "Refill of Regular Coffee", and I'm paid and out the door.
I'm always in the mood for a good "Cup of Joe". My mood of the day, never changes my mood for that!

Since my husband brews a great cup of coffee, it's usually "Thanks honey!" to whatever's in the coffee pot! We vary from Vanilla, to Hazelnut to Irish Creme to Blueberry even! BUT, since Starbucks just opened here in our town (yeah, it's a small town! ;-) I occasionally treat myself to a "Grande, 2% Cappuccino"...the thing is they switched to 2% all the time...so they keep telling me I don't have to specify that part...but it's just so automatic!

Japan had hundreds of thousands of coffee shops opened after the war, by the local communist party (coffee complete with Russian inspirational songs in the background). That blended with a pre-war intellectual coffee jazz house tradition here. The result was a huge market for coffee so Japan's firms bought the best slopes in Jamaica (Blue Mountain) among other places.
Japan, unlike Starbucks, does not OVER roast so they maintain the 8 principal oils and 30+ special oils of the beans = less bitter flavor and more nuanced sweet round flavors. I live 40 minutes outside Osaka and have in the countryside around me 5 Art Kisas, where absolutely great Blue Mountain, Kilimanjaro, etc. coffees are buyable in shops decorated with art by local artists (paintings selling for 50,000 US$ and up).

Hi Jacques,
Since I work at home, I tend to make my own coffee, but still, I do go out sometimes :-) and my favourite coffee is a large latte (in Dutch, as you know, it's called a 'koffie verkeerd', which roughly translates as coffee made the wrong way). What I really miss in the Netherlands, is the combination bookshop-Starbucks, the way you have them in Scotland, Ireland and the US. I love browsing with the smell of coffee in my nostrils.
Cheers, Josee->

Dear Jacques,
I rarely buy coffee when I am out - either I make it at home or drink the "regular" in the office with cream and a little sweetner.
But when I am traveling and going through airports, I try to grab something that is not hot and something kind of light. So what I usually get when possible is a Mocha Light Frappuccino with a shot of French Vanilla. It's like getting a Light Vanilla Shake with a kick of caffeine.

I'm not sure if it's an indication that I drink too much coffeee, but Juan Valdez named his donkey after me ... usually I just ask for the largest size of whatever basic coffee is being offered nad ask them to leave room for cream
"Grande, 3 pump, skim, no whip, white chocolate mocha, extra hot." If it's the afternoon, I add "decaf" in front of that, or maybe "half decaf".
My second favourite one is not coffee: "Grande, iced chai latte"
Starbucks added some benefits it you use their pre-loaded card that you can refill on line. Register your card with them and (1) Syrup and milk options are on the house (you don't pay), (2) free brewed coffee refills, (3) complimentary tall beverage with purchase of beans. And as always, bring your own mug, and save mother earth and 10 cents on your drink.
I have a set amount I budget for my monthly use, and load that on my card. You can also reload someone else's card on line (your child in college or your mom in another town). If you lose a card, call Starbucks and they'll cancel it and send you a new card with your current balance on it. Best of all: When you register your Starbucks Card and use it at least once a month, you’ll receive two consecutive hours a day of complimentary Wi-Fi, courtesy of AT&T starting June 3.
And yes, I have Starbucks stock and it's not done too well recently. :( So start using your new preloaded cards! :)

Since I always go to the same Starbucks, I just say hi. My order though:
Venti Blackeye (coffee + 2 shots)
If I feel sluggish... Venti Quad (coffee + 4 shots)
My wife though.. Different story, I don't know what the heck she orders sometimes. Usually it will be something like a half-caff venti mocha with whipped cream or Peach Vanilla Venti Tazo or something really peculiar.
Me, I'm normal, same coffee, diff day. Venti Blackeye or Venti Quad

Hello J.
I "used to be" a major coffee drinker. Coffee for me, did give the boost during the course of the day. Coffee for myself was like a great glass of wine.
But for some unknown reason about 5 or so years ago, my body just did not desire it anymore.
It was replaced with tea. I especially love my "berry teas" during the winters.
