LinkedIn phenomenon

Positive feedback of the LinkedIn is genuine among many LI users.
Here is mine...
LI is a place I gain positive power everyday. I have enormous regret when one of my favorite Chinese dishes was overcooked for my family while I was on the LI.

What is yours ?

Clarification added February 27, 2008:

John, thanks for your sympathy... I am banned to use computer while I am cooking for family, there is a thought in the family to install software that will shut down my computer during cooking time.

Clarification added March 3, 2008:

I am still digesting my last overcooked food alone, bye bye (Tim).
James, it is a great idea to spend a day at Schlotzky's with family... very inspiring idea !

Clarification added September 26, 2009:

Reopen this Q&A to learn more from many new friends I met over last year... I truly enjoy spending time here to learn and share with global professionals. I won't overcook dishes now because I move my computer next to the kitchen...

I can relate to that, Wei.

Just yesterday I sacrificed warming and stretching for my body sculpt class to stay on the
computer in my gym to check linkedin's Q & A and participate.

Have an amazing day, my esteemed linkedin friend !

I'm not sure I fully regret skipping or messing up certain chores! However, I do find myself evaluating my compulsive attitude in regards to LI's Q&As...

Perhaps those of us in the same predicament experience a daily void of social contact, and since LI provides us with the perfect medium to minimize our loss, we plunge into it like thirsty camels!

No regrets here, I'm afraid!

Thanks for asking Wei, your questions are always on target.

For me the LinkedIn phenomenon is about hearing other people's success stories and watching LinkedIn's users help one another grow professionally. I truly feel like LinkedIn is a network where you get what you give. I love watching a newbie ask their network a question and then see them pay-it-forward by responding to someone else's question. Watching the wealth of knowledge that is exchanged on this network daily constantly amazes me.

Although I am signed up with a few other social networking sites, LinkedIn is the only one that I use regularly. I like the fact that it is business oriented in nature and I really enjoy the Q&A section.

I have been in LI for only one day and I can't believe I missed for so long.
It's so interesting, love the Q&A, I am learning a lot and I feel very happy to share my knowledge with other business people.

ni hao wei!

it's been a while since we've chatted, and of course LI has been a powerful tool for me in many ways - staying in touch with friends on the other side of the world in Asia, reconnecting with old friends and colleagues upon my return to the states, research in job and industry hunting in between, and now, uncovering a wonderful collection of expert advice. Probably the best part for me was something that you started when you asked if a friend of yours could interview some of my former colleagues/business associates in Shanghai - the empowerment and gratification they felt from the mere idea and appreciation for how this networking "thing" works really brought it home to me. So for that, I thank you. xie xie

I was considering an evening class at Stanford, but wasn't certain if it'd be relevant to my job. I found the professor on Linkedin and asked him to tell me more than what was posted on the website. He met me for coffee, and actually interviewed me about what I'd like to get out of the class!

Guess that's a class I'll be attending!

Greg is right, I had over 30 interviews during my recent trip to Shanghai and Beijing. Of course some had known Wei Luo for years, but others were 100% virtual contacts via LinkedIn. Now if I could just get the stories from the interviews written and published!!! Don't worry, they are coming along fine.

Yes LI is amazing. Here we have people sharing their strategy for world domination and sharing it freely! I know that my competitors are on here and that they look for my questions and answers: GREAT! The tides rises all boats! You can be sure that I look for their questions and answers as well.

As for overcooking your dinner... Google "timer software" and see what you come up with! I included a link to a promising one! Put technology to work for YOU and don't let it control you!

Hey Wei-
I enjoy the LinkedIn Q&A section the most because I get tired of all the insults and pointless arguing I see on other boards. This is the only one I've found that I don't consider a complete waste of time.

It's certainly a great place to expand a network and find others who have expertise in something that may be brand new to me.

As far as ruining dinner, just take the family to Schlotzky's. You know you can stay online there, too. :-)

Regards,
james

Good day again Wei,

I see LI's strength as medium being two-fold (like wheels on an axis):

1) How the active participants benefit from utilizing LI (making a withdrawal if you will)

2) What the active participants contribute to LI (making a deposit if you will)

Thus far, I see the LI balance as being in the black vs. the red. Moreover, I’m confident with all the expertise and talent herein it’ll stay that way!

Regards,

John S. Rajeski

This is fascinating, I just read a handful of the replies and the LI devotees are as strong as those you'd find on FB or Twitter. Each platform has it's own following and own unique means of communication. I've always viewed LI as more formal and professional but gauging from the replies here it has just as much heart beneath the surface!

Together we all go farther.

Good day Wei!

I came to LI as a supplement to my F-2-F networking activities for my business and while I still use it for that, LI has provided me with a window into a word of people and experiences that far exceeded my expectations.

In the "real" world, I can absorb and interact only as far as I can see and hear, in LI, I can jump oceans and share in the lives of remarkable people that wouldn't exist for me without this place. The more diverse a group I interact with, the more open my eyes become.

The smoke detector is going off, gotta run, I must have burned the toast.

Professionally I grew so much in the last year by being on LI sharing expertise and knowledge between experts from all over the world learning more about subjects I was never ever exposed to before
I gave up most of my FB time to be on Q&A
It is because being on LI a year ago I decided to really learn about SM and not only have it as a hobby I did and became certified in it
I met so many wornderful and not so wonderful people on LI but the majority are great people some became friends
It is so cool to be ablet get expert opinions on a complex subject in a matter of days and sometimes hours

IMHO, we are witnessing the birth of a true global community. Not just a political "happy talk" structure, designed in theory in one of academia's ivory towers, but one that has roots in reality.

And it's a wonderful thing.
