Who are LifeRay's competitors and what is LifeRay good at doing? Is it like SharePoint? Drupal? eXo Platform? Jive? What are some sites I can visit built with LifeRay?

LifeRay is a portal framework that gives developers a starting point to build from. It also has several canned social networking and business networking aspects built in. Its a solid, supported system the comes with a CMS for easy support of the active site and has one of the best UI's out there. Additional benefits include, SSO (Single Sign On) for applications created and shared via the portal. Roles based Authentication and Permissions once in the portal. Working from what is a managed code base is also a huge gain. The core of the platform is supported (if purchased) and guaranties you a framework that is properly tested and supported. This leaves you to focus on the applications and content of the framework as opposed to the entire system. It should be noted that these benefits are common amongst all frameworks (in general).
There are several competitors to LifeRay. They include (see links)
JBoss Enterprise Portal Platform
EXO Portal Framework
JetSpeed 2
Web Logic Portal : http://www.oracle.com/appserver/portal_home.html

Hope this helps
