Which companies are making interesting applications for the iPhone?

Hi,

I'm speaking at a conference and cool new iPhone content / apps are part of the session.

If you know of, or are working on, something interesting do let me know!

Thanks,

Oisin

With over 100,000 SDK downloads in the first four (4) days you can rest assured that there will be some interesting applications.

The first we know about are those that presented at the keynote.

The companies/developers that were present at the SDK launch keynote:

Games:
Sega (Super Monkey Ball)
EA (Spore)

Applications:
Genentech (internal enterprise application)
epocrates (dosing and medication guidelines for doctors)
SalesForce (sales/team management)

Adobe and Sun have announced that they will bring Flash and Java (respectively) to the iPhone, although there is controversy surrounding when and if this will materialize.

Gameloft (developer for some previous gen ipod games) and id software (of Doom fame) have both stated interest in developing games for the platform.

There are also applications that currently work within the iPhone in Safari, expect many to get ported over to run natively.

Existing web client applications can be found in the first and second link below.

I expect that there will also be a glut of enterprise applications that are going to hit the market and be invisible to the average user. They will run specific business software for large companies. I think that pharma/biotech and other industries with large distributed sales forces will see the value in creating custom software to train and track employees. It seems that Genentech is already going this route.

My biggest surprise is SAP!!! : )
Expect other big players to follow suit. The number of smaller niche professional applications is mushrooming, I can only encourage you to set up a google news email alert to catch the latest announcements for your conference address.

Check out IBM... 120+ Million corporate licenses... I've already ported several applications to the Blackberry Browser (could have been just as easily to iphone). A CRM in particular clients can view companies, clients, click on a client for Google map autopopup, create call reports... All this could be just as easily through iphone (when they get as secure as RIM) since it is all browser based.

Notes does way more than just email, also a whole deveopment platform for the WEB 2.0 and notes client including web services, mashups, db2 backend now... I can go on and on..

Until the Apple SDK yields some results most of the applications will be web-based (unless you're willing to "jailbreak" your iPhone to install other applications - something I do not recommend).

To that end, I do have several bookmarked in a special folder that syncs to my iPhone that you might find are representative of what developers are delivering today:

Google's Personalized Page - senses mobile devices and automatically switches formats.

http://www.google.com/ig/i

MovieTickets.com - Great way to find movies, theaters, purchase tickets, etc. from the iPhone.

http://iphone.movietickets.com/

Dictionary.com - A java script bookmarklet that pops up a small box on screen for you to enter any word you want defined; after entering it and hitting "OK" it automatically looks up the definition on the Dictionary.com site and displays the answer. I use it frequently almost every day.

javascript:var%20q=escape(window.getSelection()),i,ii;if(!q)%7Bfor(i=0;i%3Cframes.length;i++)%7Bvar%20fr=frames%5Bi%5D;try%7Bq=escape(fr.getSelection())%7Dcatch(e)%7B%7D;if(q)break;else%7Bfor(ii=0;ii%3Cfr.frames.length;ii++)%7Btry%7Bq=escape(fr.frames%5Bii%5D.getSelection())%7Dcatch(e)%7B%7D;if(q)break;%7D%7D%7D%7Dif(!q)void(q=prompt('Enter%20word%20to%20define%3A',''));if(q)void(location.href='http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term='+q);

Thesaurus - Java script bookmarklet that does the same thing as the dictionary version, but as a thesaurus.

javascript:var%20q=escape(window.getSelection()),i,ii;if(!q)%7Bfor(i=0;i%3Cframes.length;i++)%7Bvar%20fr=frames%5Bi%5D;try%7Bq=escape(fr.getSelection())%7Dcatch(e)%7B%7D;if(q)break;else%7Bfor(ii=0;ii%3Cfr.frames.length;ii++)%7Btry%7Bq=escape(fr.frames%5Bii%5D.getSelection())%7Dcatch(e)%7B%7D;if(q)break;%7D%7D%7D%7Dif(!q)void(q=prompt('Enter%20the%20word%20you%20want%20synonyms%20for%3A',''));if(q)void(location.href='http://www.thesaurus.com/cgi-bin/search?config=roget&words='+q);

Internet Movie Database - As a movie fanatic I'm always trying to find out who was cast in a certain role, who directed a particular film, etc. This is another java script bookmarklet that does that for the IMDB web page.

javascript:Qr=prompt('Search%20IMDB%20for','');if(Qr)location.href='http://www.imdb.com/find?q='+escape(Qr)

DirecTV DVR Scheduler - If you're a DirecTV subscriber and want to program your DVR remotely from the iPhone this page makes it easy. Formatted especially for the device (but usable from a PC, too) this is an excellent way to program recordings when away from your DVR.

http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/mobile/

Send to iPhone - This one actually works in reverse... when you find info on Google Maps, MapQuest or Yahoo Maps you can send the information from your PC browser to your iPhone in a fashion that's formatted especially for the phone. You get a link via email that you click on and it takes you to that same location and map using the iPhone's Google Maps. Very handy.

javascript:d=window.getSelection()+'';d=(d.length==0)?'null':d;d.replace(%22%3Cbr%20/%3E%22,%20%22%20%22);void(window.open('http://iphonesender.com/prep.php?address='+escape(d),'_blank','')%20);

FlyTunes - Like satellite radio for your iPhone. Absolutely indispensable. And free.

http://www.flytunes.fm/Player/MobileBookmark.aspx?ACCESS=7abb5f12-6b79-4c8a-a6d6-2e3e47547069

I've written about FlyTunes, in fact, and several other iPhone sites, shortcuts, accessories and more on my blog:

http://www.TheWirelessWizard.com/tips

Hope this helps. Keep us posted on the whole list, would you, and I'll post a piece in my blog about it when completed. Good luck!

The best source of following this activity will be www.kpcb.com. They are doing the 100m fund and according to Mike Murphy want to create a new platform rather then port old apps to the iphone.
