Alex,
Twitter is not a replacement for SMS.
there are more than 400 million mobile users in my country.
less than 5% of users know that there is a phenomenon called "twitter".
further in corporate network (in all countries) they block twitter.
this may not be true in your country.

No Twitter is omnidirectional blogging. Text messaging was disigned as an alternative when the coverage for mobile phones was insufficient. The text would be sent when a call was not clear or possible. Text then became an affordable adoption where pricing of calls in certain countries was ihibitive. In the EU Twitter requires as suffcient coverage as if one were to call and it is not neccessarily a cheaper alternative.

I have heard of Twitter but I have to say in my line of work, even SMS is not appropriate. I have never been a fan of SMS either, I find it a long winded way of saying something, although, I do understand SMS has its uses, i.e. for telling the wife i will be late home from a meeting etc. I have 5 children , two who are great fans of texting and facebook and so on, but even their friends have no idea about twitter (I did ask them once before about it) and yet they live in the age where communication is done via SMS, msn messenger and their homework is done on a computer. I would say at the moment, I dont think it will replace SMS, for a number of reasons, and although I am taking my que for children, in a way they are the future and the ones more likely to embrace this kind of thing, after all, when I am retired, it will be them who will be doing my kind of work.

Twitter is still very much an evolving channel here in the UK - in the US it's used more widely, but then SMS use is lower. You could argue that this has left a vacuum for Twitter that simply doesn't exist in the UK.

Nope because none of my friends use Twitter.

My friends are from 18-30 year olds, they don't use it because, well, they don't see the point because they have Facebook. Heavy SMS usage is generally done by the younger demographics too

I use Twitter for self development and because I work in the mobile industry. My friends simply don't care, it can be easy to think it's taking the youth demographic by storm but it isn't. The link below is the best report on Twitter I've seen so far.

Twitter can't even begin to replace SMS until it gets to saturation like Facebook. I actually do use Facebook instead of SMS when I need to msg more than one person because you can see all replies on the thread and for stuff less urgent.

Twitter is only around 10 - 20 million users depending on where you read. Can that really replace SMS with your friends?

No -- Twitter is a great way to brand and market yourself, as well as make yourself heard. I have never used text messaging as a way to brand and market myself and generally only use it in place of phoning someone.

No, it serves a different purpose.

There is also a tendency to think Twitter is pervasive and it isn't. It's not even clear that it will be that long lasting.

No. As obnoxious as it is, text messaging is still a form of communication between two people. Twitter is nothing but shortened, self-indulgent spam broadcast to many, content-empty and instantly forgettable. Twitter is a fad that had already outlived its 15 seconds of usefulness the day it launched as will soon be left in the dustheap of other useless techno-gimmicks.

Alex;

If anything, Twitter is enhancing adoption of SMS skills in the U.S. for the 18 & older demographic. In spite of the proliferation of “smart” phones in the U.S., mobile is still in its infancy/toddlerhood here. Social Media, on the other hand is more like that awkward teenager, on the cusp of maturing into something.

Twitter, being based on a platform that spans the two most popular forms of communication (Mobile & Online) will have greater users by default. People are still very protective of their cellphone numbers. While many are willing to connect on social media channels, they are fearful of giving up that cellphone number without already having a trusted relationship in place. So, if we are talking purely about reach, then Social Media tools as a main communication tool will still outreach mobile. If we are talking about mobile for marketing, then social media will again trump mobile as there is the trust factor. Mobile campaigns in the U.S. have a conversion rate less than that of even direct mail, again, due to the great dislike of spam on our cellphones.

As for everyone touting the fact that “teens don’t tweet”, unless you or your target audience is a “teen” then that is the worst basis for determining communication trends, especially since the latest reports show that 18 & under & 60+ are the fastest growing segments of Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms. Again, this is different in other countries but I can give insight for here in the U.S.

No for 3 reasons
1. The two communication SMS offers doesn't require any type of registration.
2. Twitter helps you get a message to a group of people for a specific niche, with that format it will never be adopted as a primary mode of communicating.
3. Point #1 reiterated everyong you kow would have to have a twitter acct for it to replace SMS messaging. That includes, your kids, parents, grandparents, best friend, uncles, neighbors... I could go on & on.

I hate to say this, but after reading through the majority of the answers on this question, I believe most of the answerers have it wrong about their understanding of Twitter.

I just finished reading the book Twitterville, as well as Twitter for Dummies, and my eyes have been opened to the possibilities of what to do with it.

Twitter is not a communication tool for which to keep up with all the folks you are following. It's really a data-mining tool which allows one to find out what everyone is talking about - in real time, no delays of hours, days, weeks, or months. This is Faith Popcorn on steroids, folks!

Large companies who are not engaging media managers to monitor tweets on a daily basis for queries, tweets, re-tweets, and feeds where their company name is mentioned don't understand the new technology, and will not be able to nip negative publicity in the bud. The book Twitterville, is an awesome source for ideas and anecdotes where companies used the tool as a resource to see what was being said, tracking down the users, resolving issues almost instantly (as close to real-time as possible), and then having more positive responses going out once any concerns were resolved. Imagine the Tylenol scare several decades ago, and how fast that would be quashed, if Twitter was around at that time! (Although Tylenol brand manufacture responded as quickly as feasible, imagine a Tweeting nation warning folks not to use the medicine - how many of those deaths by poisoning would have been averted?)

I don't tie my Twitter to my phone, so have to actually sign in or watch my Tweet-Deck for feeds. And my linkedin account does have the application on my profile. And, I'm using it more often for making statements or advertising something I found that is really out of the ordinary - not what I'm doing at the moment (no one in their right mind is interested in my toothbrushing or dinner habits). But, someone might be interested in a new URL focusing on a free webinar or social networking or free give-away products.

Most answers here are right on. SMS is the common thread that works and allows "dumb" phones with no app capability, no mobile web, and no data plans to connect with the smartest phones out there on the most robust "all you can eat" plans. It is one of the basic foundations of the great performance that is associated with mobile marketing (twitter will never be able to say that over 90% of tweets are read within 5 minutes of receipt) and a direct connection for you to the end user. Its also a secure, trusted environment that is still free of much of the unsolicited and impersonal automation that is already running rampant on twitter. The value and effectiveness of a relevant, useful, and timely SMS has to far outweigh that of a tweet.

I haven't seen the numbers but I would bet that facebook messaging, just based on the 100,000,000 monthly mobile user visits, might rival that of twitter. In an amazing show of the human race's ability to communicate prolifically, however, SMS's sent and received per month are still increasing regularly and show few signs of slowing down.

All that said, there are likely some common threads amongst users of twitter that have replaced SMS messaging in their lives with the DM or tweet so I'm sure there is (or will soon be) a way to aggregate that audience and advertise to them too.

Twitter is a highly functional adjunct for SMS, but still a niche no matter how much buzz and hype it gets. It's still an unprofitable service without a business plan.

While Twitter is highly popular in the tech sector, and widely used among business people of certain demographics, it's of almost zero interest to teens and college students, who are the highest users of SMS.

Twitter is simply one tool among many. While it may be a good one, it's not the only one.

Aside - What about the many people who use Twitter via SMS? It's not the only way I use Twitter, but I do is the SMS interface for it.

Info - I've been on Twitter almost 4 years now (@kencamp).Tweeted around 20K times, yet I average between 17-20K SMS messsages per month for the past few years.

I've actually used Twitter less and less over the past few years. I think I might tweet now once a month (maybe). That being said, I send WAY more text messages to the point where I had to get an app that does it for free. Once the mobile carriers offer an inexpensive unlimited texting plan, twitter might very well be right behind Blockbuster in the breadline.

No I do not think so, SMS is one to one, twitter is one to many. And the flat rate - at least here in Sweden - will talk to the advantage for SMS. You get 5 000 a month for a fast flat rate per month. That is not - yet - the case for twitter that requires internet access.

Some phones do not have internet access. Yet anouther advantage doing SMS.

Talking about Twitter replacing SMS is analagous to automobiles replacing shoes. Automobiles are wonderful things and I wouldn't do without mine willingly, but pretty much everyone I know has shoes. Shoes work well indoors, automobiles... Well, not so much.

Twitter and SMS are related, but neither is a replacement for the other and I can't imagine that changing anytime soon.

Text and Twitter serve very different purposes.

Twitter is more a 1-to-many conversation with the mission of providing the most relevant current information possible.

While SMS text messaging is a 1-to-1 conversation. The question is more "is Text Messaging replacing Email?" Then the answer is a qualified YES! Youth prefer text messaging over email as primary means of communication via mobile phones.
