How green is your SMS (USSD) center?

By green I obviously mean efficiency: watts per SMS, total electricity consumption per specified capacity (messages per second), necessary equipment for climate control or additional services, space requirements, training requirements, etc.

Hi Ivan
Using so called "CoolThread" servers (e.g. from SUN) you can save up to 30% of power consumption for the same performance as with traditional servers. This would, due to less heating the server room, also save a lot of energy for the air condition.

This differs drastically depending on the size and location of the operator.

Responding to SMS as the USSD in brackets does not make sense in the context provided, unless it was mean't to be both.

In one site (20 mil subs): over 300 million SMS's per day, using 120 KVA plus aircon (whole computer/network) environment, apportioned maybe 3KVA on the aircon.
In another one (3 mil subs): 20 Million SMS's day, using 450 Watt plus small aircon.

Training: Large site 5 people, on the small site 1 person (electronic technicians.

Ivan, as all of our platform are x86 server based they have become greener and greener every year. I hope that the introduction of the Core i7 architecture will take a step further on that.

Ivan,
Agree with previuos answers - depends on the size and location. In my practice for small operator SMSC and USSD were supermicro servers in the same rack in the same location with MSC. So electricity consumption, climate control etc were not considered for these particular services as a separate requirements. Also I dont think that green or greener is not included in the top operator goal or concerns.
